Player 54

What or who is Player 54? As a realist, Player 54 is the one that was left behind. Every NFL team has a roster of 53 players so number 54, well that's the one left behind.

A well-known number 54 who most will know as professional wrestler, The Rock, some will know for his countless appearances in TV and films, few may know as co-owner of the American Football league, The UFL (formerly The XFL). This inspirational speaker is the legendary Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Johnson was born in Hayward, California on May 2nd 1972. He fulfilled the prophecy everyone had for him - in trouble with the law and doing things that would jeopardise his whole future. By the age of 17, he had been arrested countless times for thefts and other crimes and he had been suspended from school. His prospects looked bleak.

His life changed when Freedom High School coach, Jody Cwik saw the potential athlete in Johnson. He was soon recruited to his school football team and his mindset began to change.

By the time he was ready for college, he had been awarded a full scholarship to the University of Miami and joined their football team, the Miami Hurricanes in 1991. The team won that year's National Championship.

A former LSU coach, Ed Orgeron, who worked with DJ stated that he believed "Dwayne Johnson had a chance to be all American" during his time at Miami.

Tragedy struck when an injury ended his college football career and he became a substitute player from then on. He appeared in 39 games, and holds a record of 77 tackles and 4.25 sacks.

His biggest heartbreak was yet to come when he became Player 54 after he remained undrafted in the 1995 NFL draft.  At this point, DJ signed with the CFL team, the Calgary Stampeders but his injuries continued to plague his career.

Some may say that Dwayne Johnson may not have the success he is currently facing had he continued on the path of his football career. Nonetheless, he is one of the most famous men in the world and continues to play a part in football regardless. DJ is the current co-owner of The UFL alongside his choldhood friend and ex-wife, Dany Garcia. DJ encourages every player he meets to never give up and get past the statistic of being another Player 54.
